Title of Report:

Request for funds to clear sand from marina entrance

Context:

This report aims to seek approval for funds to clear Marina entrance by local contractors.

Report Author:

Jake Babington –Operations Manager

  1. SUMMARY

The Marina requires funds to clear the entrance of the largest build up sand since RTC have taken ownership of the Marina. Due to the severe adverse weather we have experienced at the end of 2023 and beginning of 2024 the sand has blown in and built up to such a level it is near on impossible for vessels to enter/ exit the Marina.

  2. BACKGROUND INFORMATION

This has been an issues since taking ownership and one that the previous owners IWC have also had to deal with after what we suspect is the lack of beach management plan causing the continual build-up of sand around the harbour arm and now into the entrance. This has previously been completed twice in 2023 and once already in 2024 by k Coghlan and Reynolds and Read.

  3. FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS

This is another substantial amount requested to clear the entrance however is imperative to clear where we are now into the busy season for boat owners, with nicer weather and more favourable winds. The implications of not completing this would result in refunds to current berth holders who would hold us to the berthing conditions agreed. It would also prevent any visiting boats from entering the Marina.

  4. OPTIONS

Although a long term solution is being developed with assistance from Atkins Realis of which options will be sent through within the month. In the short-term having it cleared is our only option. Local contractors were approached for quotes to clear this sand upon a per tide quote, of which K.Coghlan replied(£1,400+VAT per tide). Reynolds and Read replied with (£1,190.00 + VAT per tide).

  5. RECOMMENDATIONS

I recommend that K.Coghlan be appointed contractor to carry out the work Although the cheaper option of Reynolds & Read would seem like the best option, they actually use smaller machinery so therefore clearing less per tide. My suggestion would be to go with K.Coghlan who have proven to work well and can clear more sand per tide.
